ZIRKA Aquarium – Open Call
A space for exhibitions, performances and curatorial practice

The Aquarium in the ZIRKA Forum is an enclosed 14-sqm-space with transparent glass fronts. It is a space for exhibitions, performances and curatorial practice. The Aquarium is used as a metaphor for seclusion and at the same time for the connection between spaces. It represents a place of transparency and fluidity where artists may respond to the fragility of our environment and create new worlds.

In the first round of applications, we are looking for projects that respond to the fragility of our environment and create new worlds. We want to show the spaces in between, the design of ecological and social living spaces and the balance between the visible and the invisible.

The Aquarium is intended to show the spaces in-between; worlds yet unnamed that need to be maintained or expanded.

Who can apply?

Munich-based artists and collectives from all disciplines (visual and performing arts, performance art, video, photography, music, literature, etc.), curators, cultural practitioners, regardless of their background. We especially encourage people with diverse knowledges, autodidacts and cultural workers with non-academic background to apply. We welcome applications from people with different identities, genders, age groups, professional experiences, backgrounds, religions and life paths in order to promote a diversity of perspectives.

What can you apply with?

You can apply with a curatorial concept, exhibition concept or performance concept of all art forms and media. It can either be a solo or a group exhibitions. The duration of your project can be between two days and four weeks

Your tasks

You are responsible for the organization, financing, logistics and set-up of the exhibition. You also have to organize staff to make the exhibition accessible to the public.

Our support

We can offer the following services as part of the project

• Free use of the aquarium at ZIRKA as exhibition space and infrastructure during preparation and realization
• Regular curatorial support from established curators, e.g. through workshops and/or mentorship meetings (this will vary)
• Organizational support from the Aquarium/ ZIRKA team (schedules, communication plans, use of space)
• Opportunity to network with other artists, curators and the public through the on-site presentation and visibility through our ZIRKA communication channels
• Cooperation with community platform Radio 80000: accompanying the exhibitions in a dedicated radio program with interviews, music and background information
• Technical equipment (in consultation)
• Documentation of the process and events (photo & video)

In consultation we can also collaborate on production of an accompanying program (talks, screenings, readings, concerts, etc.) by ZIRKA.

How can you apply?

• Project Proposal (max. 1500 words)
• Participants (with short Bio and contact details)
• Budget Plan and Finance Strategy
• Timeline for the implementation of the project

Brief introduction / bio (150 words)

• For artists or artist groups: Portfolio / previous projects
• For curators: Curriculum vitae / previous projects

Selection by a designated jury by the end of November.

ZIRKA Aquarium - Open Call
Ein Raum für Ausstellungen, Performances und kuratorische Praxis

Das Aquarium im ZIRKA Forum ist ein abgeschlossener 14 Quadratmeter großer Raum mit Glasfronten. Es ist ein Raum für Ausstellungen, Performances und kuratorische Praxis. Dabei wird das Aquarium als Metapher für Abgeschlossenheit und zugleich für die Verbindung zwischen Räumen genutzt. Es repräsentiert einen Ort der Transparenz und des Fluidität, wo Künstler:innen auf die Fragilität unserer Umwelt eingehen und neue Welten erschaffen können.

In der ersten Bewerbungsrunde suchen wir nach Projekten, die auf die Zerbrechlichkeit unserer Umwelt reagieren und neue Welten erschaffen. Wir wollen Zwischenräume zeigen, die Gestaltung ökologischer und sozialer Lebensräume und die Balance zwischen Sichtbarem und Unsichtbarem. Mit dem Aquarium möchten wir den Raum zwischen Nischen und der Welt zeigen, den es zu benennen, aufrechtzuerhalten oder zu erweitern gilt.

Wer kann sich bewerben?

In München ansässige Künstler:innen und Kollektive aller Disziplinen (bildende und darstellende Kunst, Performance, Video, Fotografie, Musik, Literatur usw.), Kurator:innen, Kulturschaffende, unabhängig von ihrem Hintergrund. Wir ermutigen insbesondere Menschen mit unterschiedlichem Wissen, Autodidakt:innen und Kulturschaffende mit nicht-akademischem Hintergrund, sich zu bewerben. Wir begrüßen Bewerbungen von Menschen mit unterschiedlichen Identitäten, Geschlechtern, Altersgruppen, Berufserfahrungen, Hintergründen, Religionen und Lebenswegen, um eine Vielfalt von Perspektiven zu fördern.

Womit könnt ihr euch bewerben?

Ihr könnt euch mit einem kuratorischen Konzept, einem Ausstellungskonzept oder einem Performancekonzept für alle Kunstformen und Medien bewerben. Es kann sich entweder um eine Einzel- oder eine Gruppenausstellung handeln. Die Dauer des Projekts kann zwischen zwei Tagen und vier Wochen betragen.

Eure Aufgaben

Ihr seid verantwortlich für die Organisation, Finanzierung, Logistik und den Aufbau der Ausstellung. Außerdem für die Bereitstellung des Personals, um die Ausstellung für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen.

Unsere Unterstützung:

Folgende Leistungen können wir im Rahmen des Projekts anbieten:

• Kostenlose Nutzung des Aquariums im ZIRKA als Ausstellungsraum und Infrastruktur während der Vorbereitung und Durchführung
• Kuratorische Unterstützung durch etablierte Kurator:innen, z.B. durch Workshops und/oder Mentorings (dies wird variieren)
• Organisatorische Unterstützung durch das Aquarium/ ZIRKA-Team (Zeitpläne, Kommunikationspläne, Raumnutzung)
• Gelegenheit zur Vernetzung mit anderen Künstler:innen, Kurator:innen und der Öffentlichkeit durch die Präsentation vor Ort und die Sichtbarkeit über unsere ZIRKA-Kommunikationskanäle
• Kooperation mit der Community-Plattform Radio 80000: Begleitung der Ausstellungen in einer eigenen Radiosendung mit Interviews, Musik und Hintergrundinformationen
• Technische Ausstattung (in Absprache)
• Dokumentation des Prozesses und der Events (Foto & Video)

In Absprache ist auch ein Begleitprogramm (Vorträge, Screenings, Lesungen, Konzerte, etc.) durch das ZIRKA möglich.
